How to study English

if you want to become a successful learner, you need to like the learning process itself. You need to treat time spent on English as time for pleasure and relaxation.. Do crazy things like talking to yourself in English or spending your evening reading a dictionary.

•Get a good English dictionary and learn new words each day. It has to be an English-English dictionary that must give phonetic transcriptions (pronunciations) and give example sentences for every word. To improve your speaking/writing ability, read the example sentences in your dictionary. They show you how to use a word and they program your brain with correct English.

•Reading and listening are both good ways to develop your English, but reading is usually much easier than listening for various reasons, because when reading, you can see the spelling of all the words, so you can look them up in a dictionary, and you can always stop to think and look things up. With listening, this is not always possible. If you choose texts which are interesting and fun (an article about computers, sports news, movie reviews, e-mail messages, or US Yahoo! Answers)

•Watching movies in English gives you spoken English input and helps you learn informal English vocabulary. Movies let you improve your pronunciation, not only grammar and vocabulary, you will learn how they say these words.

•Write a correct English sentence by consulting dictionaries, grammar guides, and the Web. Try to say or write only correct English sentences. When you speak or write and you make mistakes, you teach yourself bad habits. These bad habits may be difficult to eliminate.

•Practice the pronunciation of English sounds and words. Get lots of English sentences into your head (by reading and listening) before you open your mouth or write in English. The biggest thing that people notice about your English is by your pronunciation. You should study it even if you think you can already communicate in English.

Ideally, learning English should be your hobby. You should think of yourself as an English Learner — a person who has chosen learning English as one of their favorite activities.
